A QUEST FOR MY LITTLE SALT FIELD

Zo Wu’s project “A Quest for My Little Salt Field” is a multi-media project that explores alternative pathways to cultural reconnection as part of the Hong Kong diaspora in the UK. 鹽田仔 Yim Tin Tsai, a small island located in Sai Kung, Hong Kong, means 'Little Salt Field'. It is the birthplace of Wu's grandmother, the last generation to be born on the island, and is steeped in agricultural and Catholic history. Rooted in interviews with original islanders—many of whom have also migrated to the UK who Wu had not met prior to this project's initiation—Wu traverses the British countryside collecting fragments of an imagined utopian island to which they can thoroughly connect and wholly belong. Made from salt that is farmed on the real island in Hong Kong, the silk salt-printing process is a meditation of care and reclamation of their own cultural heritage whilst adorning the fading memories of their ancestral past. Wu's creative essay, under the same name, helps weave together the tapestried corridor which invites the viewer to step into Wu’s archival projections and perhaps reminisce, preserve and construct their own nostalgic utopias.

LEST WE FORGET                                                                                                                                                                                                                       PROJECT 002

This is a meditation and vigil to honour the Palestinian lives lost in Palestine since October 7th up till the 24th March 2024 - when the installation took place at Copeland Gallery. Inked onto chromogenic prints of photos taken at the Rememberance day protest of November 2023, each dot represents one Palestinian life lost and each print contains 2456 dots. To count the number of dots, I drew one dot on every half-beat of the song Palestine by Benjamin Zephania (76bpm) for 60 minutes. I had 6 prints by the time of the install and needed to make one more to commemorate the growing death toll in Gaza. I drew the last print as an outline of Gaza strip as part of the installation and invited people to come up and write prayers to Palestine and put them in a white bowl. Next to the bowls were too white candles that burned for approx. 60 minutes and would be used later to burn the prayers in a symbolic act of sending them off. This piece was a space to take time out of the day to honour each martyr beyond the confines of a statistical figure. It was also a statement confirming that Palestine has a place in art spaces and art has a place in protest.

Zo Wu is a 22-year-old documentary photographer, writer and multi-disciplinary artist. They work primarily with alternative analogue processes to explore themes of cultural identity, gender, and politics. Their work embraces liminality and challenges colonial binary structures, using photography as a means to navigate the grey areas of human experience. Through this lens, they seek to bridge communities and foster deeper understanding across divides. Based in London, Wu also specialises in editorial photography and creative directing, collaborating closely with musicians and artists from queer communities to platform expression, authenticity, and resistance.
