LEST WE FORGET PROJECT 002
This is a meditation and vigil to honour the Palestinian lives lost in Palestine since October 7th up till the 24th March 2024 - when the installation took place at Copeland Gallery. Inked onto chromogenic prints of photos taken at the Rememberance day protest of November 2023, each dot represents one Palestinian life lost and each print contains 2456 dots. To count the number of dots, I drew one dot on every half-beat of the song Palestine by Benjamin Zephania (76bpm) for 60 minutes. I had 6 prints by the time of the install and needed to make one more to commemorate the growing death toll in Gaza. I drew the last print as an outline of Gaza strip as part of the installation and invited people to come up and write prayers to Palestine and put them in a white bowl. Next to the bowls were too white candles that burned for approx. 60 minutes and would be used later to burn the prayers in a symbolic act of sending them off. This piece was a space to take time out of the day to honour each martyr beyond the confines of a statistical figure. It was also a statement confirming that Palestine has a place in art spaces and art has a place in protest. lest we forget
